Maxwell John Hatch
1924 – 2016

On Thursday, March 24, 2016, Max passed away at Concordia Hospital with his family by his side.

He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his daughters Jackie (Norm) and Teddi; his grandchildren Kim (Mike), Ben (Kerri), and Garth; and his great-grandchildren Sara and Matthew.

Max was predeceased by his wife Phyllis in 2014; his son-in-law Jim in 2011; as well as his parents and many brothers and sisters.

Dad was the seventh of ten siblings born in the West Sifton Municipality of Manitoba to John and Honor Hatch. He grew up on a small farm in the area during the depression years and had to leave school after the eighth grade to help support the family. He went to work for McDonalds in Brandon. In 1943 he was proud to join the Air Force and served overseas in London for the duration of the war. Upon returning to Canada, he settled in Brandon. He met mom at a dance in Kenton and they were married in the fall of 1948.

Dad knew the value of hard work. Not only did he work in a clothing store during the day when he was first married but he also did the cleaning in the evening to support his family. He joined the Codville Company and located his family in Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, and finally Winnipeg as he rose through the ranks from clerk to President. He had a long, distinguished career with Codville’s spanning almost forty years until his retirement.

Dad was a loving husband, a devoted father and a role model to all who knew him. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. Everyone was treated as an equal and in a fair manner. From the routine of everyday life to the holiday vacations or simple Sunday excursions, from education to careers and marriage, Dad extended to his family and friends a generosity of love, guidance, and opportunity.

Despite being faced with a series of health challenges during the final six months of his life, Dad retained his dry sense of humour, remaining curious and genuinely interested in the world around him.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the nursing staff at the Concordia Hospital for their attentive care, compassion and kindness in the last days of Dad’s life.

In keeping with Dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street.

If so desired, in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, Unit 301, 1 Wesley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4C6, or the charity of your choice.
