Peacefully with family and friends by her side, our dear sweet Jackie passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Jackie is survived by the man and mate with whom she wanted to grow old, Paul White, her brother Michael Shymanski, sister-in-law Anna, nephews Nick and Andrew, Paul’s son John and many cousins, extended family and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents Monica and Roy Shymanski, her grandparents and her first nephew Eric.
Following her graduation from Garden City Collegiate, Jackie continued her education in journalism and public relations at Red River College in Winnipeg. Then she launched her long and glorious career in media by accepting a position with IMTV in Dauphin as a news reporter and weather girl. Her natural abilities in writing, problem-solving and not taking things at face value enabled her career to thrive from small town Manitoba and Saskatchewan to landing her dream job at CTV Winnipeg in 1989. After watching world events like the fall of the Berlin Wall, she decided overseas was the place to be. So off to Eastern Europe she went – no job, just ambition and a thousand dollars in her pocket.
She spent a decade working as an international journalist, initially freelance and ultimately under contract with CNN International, covering wars in former Yugoslavia, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and other compelling international stories as her journalism took her through dozens and dozens of countries all over the world. She was awarded the Silver duPont award from Columbia University for coverage of the war in Bosnia Herzegovina in 1994 along with CNN counterparts and was nominated for several additional awards. When she had seen enough of the human tragedies of wars, she returned home to Winnipeg finding solace working at the peaceful English gardens at Assiniboine Park. Later she excelled on the other side of the media world, doing media and public relations for MTS, Manitoba Lotteries Commission and lastly with CancerCare Manitoba.
Jackie had a magnetic personality and people instinctively were drawn to her. She was an intellectual person who loved to engage in conversations and debates on international current affairs. A great public speaker, she had many interesting stories to share. She had a soft spot for all animals. Growing up she spent countless hours riding her horse Lucky. Many summers were spent at her grandparent’s farm in Fraserwood. Two of her greatest treasures however were her two nephews whom she adored and loved spending time with.
Jackie was very sociable, and she and Paul loved travelling and entertaining family and friends. She delighted in creating new dishes, scouring recipe books for new recipes to try at her next dinner party. She loved flowers and gardening and was always drawn to the waters of Lake Winnipeg. She lived for years at Sandy Hook and later spent countless hours driving around Gimli with Paul in pursuit of the perfect cottage.
The family would like to thank the CancerCare team, the surgical team and the doctors and staff at HSC A4 and all the friends that supported us during these past few months. And a special thank you to Shelley, Theresa, Heather and Lori for their support throughout her final battle.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Jackie’s memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society or CancerCare Manitoba.
A funeral service will take place on Saturday May 21, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul.

-30-
