<div itemprop="description">Herbert Richard Gruhle<br>November 7, 1928 ~ September 5, 2016<br><br>It is with great sadness that the family of Herbert Gruhle announces his peaceful passing on Monday, September 5, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.<br><br>Herbert leaves to mourn his passing his wife Maria who he shared a wonderful 63 years with; his two sons Bernhard and Ernst (Sherry). Herbert was a proud Opa to four granddaughters Stephanie, Alyson (Jarred), Samantha (Tyler), and predeceased by Sydni. Herbert’s sisters Hanna (Blasius) and Magda; brother-in-law Hans; sister-in-law Christel are among many other family, friends, nieces, and nephews that will miss him dearly. <br><br>Herbert was predeceased by his parents Otto and Frieda; and his siblings Heinz, Hans, Helmut, Irene, and Edith.<br><br>Herbert was born on November 7, 1928 in Meltewitz, Germany. He began his apprenticeship as a sausage maker at the young age of 14. When Maria and he immigrated to Canada in May of 1953, Herbert continued his love of the trade here in Winnipeg. First he began working at Manitoba Sausage and then Winnipeg Old Country Sausage for a total of 42 years, retiring in 1993.<br><br>He loved spending his summers at Hillside Beach. He especially loved to plant and harvest his large garden, go wild mushroom and blueberry picking for hours on end, and smoking his famous catfish. Herbert’s smoked catfish was the best that anyone had tasted and he was known to fill everyone’s orders throughout the summer.<br><br>Herbert was an avid swimmer, whether he swam in Lake Winnipeg or at the North Centennial Pool, it didn’t matter to him. You could also hold a long conversation with Herbert if you knew anything about hockey and football, something he kept tabs on so he could discuss with his sons. <br><br>Memorial service will be held Monday, September 12, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 370 McKenzie Street. Reception will follow in the Church hall.<br><br>The family would like to thank all of the caregivers, nurses, and doctors at the Riverview Health Centre for all their compassion over the past two months. <br><br>In lieu of flowers donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, St. John’s Lutheran Church, memorial fund or a charity of ones choice.<br><br></div>
