Elaine Margaret Joyce
(nee Kellas)

Peacefully on December 29, 2013, at the Grace Hospice, with her family and her dog Sandee by her side, Elaine passed away at the age of 63 after a five year battle with cancer.

Elaine will be lovingly remembered by her brothers and sisters, Bruce (Sigrid), Dianne, Lorna (Michael), Robert (Sharon) and David (Sandy), nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, special friend Bob Paquin, friends Kim Sutherland, Donna Keller, Fern Podzuk, and many other friends and neighbours too numerous to mention. Elaine was predeceased by her parents, Douglas and Joan Kellas.

Born on January 28, 1950, Elaine was raised in the Fort Rouge area of Winnipeg. She attended La Verendrye, Earl Grey and Kelvin schools and then began working for Manitoba Hydro. In May 1975 Elaine joined the Winnipeg Police Service as one of the first uniformed women constables assigned to patrol duties in the traffic control division. She retired with the rank of Constable in July 2004 after 29 years of service.

As a child Elaine enjoyed her summers at the family cottage at Grand Beach. Living most of her adult life in East Kildonan, Elaine made many lifelong friends and loved to have coffee in the evening with her neighbours. She loved antique shopping and visited many of the shops in rural Manitoba and Saskatchewan on expeditions with her friend Donna. She also loved horseback riding and, one summer, travelled to Alberta for an outdoor camping holiday in the mountains.

Elaine will be remembered for her kindness and generosity. She was well respected in the community for volunteering her time and effort to help others. She served as a board member at the Middlechurch Home for several years. Elaine was a very talented knitter and you may have been fortunate to have received an afghan, mitts or scarf as a gift from her. She included many pairs of her knitted mittens in her hampers for the Christmas Cheer Board. As an avid animal lover she was a foster Mom to nearly 20 Humane Society dogs who needed extra special care and love. She adopted her last two foster dogs, Kelly and Sandee.

Elaine’s family extends special thanks to her Cancer Care doctors, the staff in the emergency room and 5th and 6th floor at St. Boniface Hospital, and a special thank you to the staff and volunteers of the Grace Hospice, who provided exemplary care to ensure Elaine was comfortable in her last weeks.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elaine’s memory to Cancer Care Manitoba, St. Boniface Unit, 0 Block 409 Tache Ave. Winnipeg, MB or to the Winnipeg Humane Society 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3

Memorial Service to be held on Monday, January 6, 2014 at 10:00 am at Glen Eden Funeral Home,
4477 Main Street.
