After an unbelievable journey lasting 102 years, Leona passed away on December 12, 2015.

Leona was predeceased by her husband Bert in 1976; her parents Thomas and Lil Lovegrove; and her sister Lillian Lovegrove.

She is survived by her daughter Connie Johnson (Harold deceased); her son Ron (Diane); four granddaughters Sandra Franz (Darcy), Carla Bailey (Darren), Kelly Wilson (Scott), and Jayda Chatfield (Laszlo Temesvary); six great-grandchildren Kirsten, Aly, Shae, Chelsea, Devon, and Sean; one great great-granddaughter Rose; and expecting a seventh great-grandchild.

Leona was born May 19, 1913 in Shoal Lake, Manitoba.

Leona and Bert spend their early married years in Brandon, subsequently moving to St. James where Leona opened her own Millinery shop on Portage Avenue in St. James, followed by being called to work at a premier millinery shop in downtown Winnipeg.

Leona and Bert eventually bought a house at 295 Belvidere Street in Deer Lodge where they enjoyed lasting, close friendships with their neighbours and community.

In the summer of 1952, Leona and Bert discovered a summer cottage for sale along the Red River on Henderson Highway in East St. Paul and bought it on sight. The story of their purchase is written up in the East St. Paul Centennial Book. Leona and Bert enjoyed their summer cottage for several years and eventually built their own new home on the site. Leona’s husband, Bert, passed away in 1976 and Leona continued living in her home until the age of 99.

Leona was always an entrepreneur, as was Bert, which in the late 1950’s brought them to board a cargo liner in Seattle and set sail for Hong Kong and Japan. Leona established contacts in Hong Kong to source Chinese art and antiques from mainland China and established her oriental art and antique business known as “The Orient” operating out of the family owned building at 168 Bannatyne. Leona soon became the source of anything in Chinese Art and was well respected by the interior design community in Winnipeg, Toronto, and New York. Her successful business led to many buying trips to Hong Kong and she kept active in her business until she reached 86, when she slowed down by running her business from home.

Leona eventually required home assistance and received exceptional, compassionate care from her home care givers, Trudy, Elena, Maria, Alma, and Nita. Leona also cherished the devotion and friendship from her special friends, Rosa and Linda right up to her final days.

At age 99, Leona moved to Concordia Place where she received excellent, compassionate care and we send our heartfelt thank you to all of the Concordia Places staff who provided such care to Mother during her time as a resident and a special thank you to the staff who gave such compassionate care to Leona’s family during her final days.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 17, 2015, at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street.

In lieu of flowers we invite you to support your favorite animal shelter in Leona’s name.

Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenedenmemorial.ca
